It was announced earlier today that Jay Pandolfo would miss the next 4-6 weeks due to a broken foot. The injury was sustained on Saturday afternoon during the Islanders matinee game against the New Jersey Devils He blocked a shot from Devils defensemen Mark Fayne.
Newsday’s Arthur Staple reports that Nino Niederreiter will be back in the Islanders lineup tomorrow night against the Buffalo Sabres.
Niederreiter was apparently told in advance that he’d be out a full week to “work on his conditioning and learn what he needs to do by watching.” A situation that was similar to what the team did with Kyle Okposo.
"I just need to get a little dirtier out there," Niederreiter told Newsday. "Go to the paint, throw pucks on net, get myself into traffic."
Prior to last Wednesday night’s game against the Flyer I spoke with Niederreiter.
(Niederreiter on his first several games in the NHL and the difference from last season)
“It’s been fun. It was definitely way different, I felt way more comfortable, but I came from an injury and it’s always tough to come back. It was my first injury, so I never really had a feeling of how that’s gunna be, but overall it’s good.”
(On the whether playing in the AHL was a nice transition to the NHL)
“No, it was a good step to do the AHL first then come back up here and get a couple games in. It was definitely good.”
(On what it’s like to go through losing streak as a young player)
“It’s definitely different, but I mean I haven’t played a lot yet. So it’s hard to tell either the right things.”
