Martinek Injured at Worlds and Other tournament News | May

Arturs Kulda was given a three game suspension yesterday for his hit on Radek Martinek during yesterday’s game between the Czech Republic and Latvia.

Martinek was on the far side of the ice near the end boards when Kulda came in, left his feet and hit Martinek into the boards. Martinek was laid on the ice for several minutes before he had to be taken off by a stretcher. He has been ruled out for the rest of the World hockey Championships.

Jan-Ake Edvinsson, Chairmen of the IIHF’s disciplinary panel, told the Associated Press, “the video showed Arturs Kulda jumping into the situation, hitting Martinek’s head and neck area.”


In other World Championship news, John Tavares and Team Canada defeated the French team this morning 9-1. Tavares had two assists in today’s matchup raising his stats to 1 goal, 3 assists for 4 points. Eight different Canadian players scored in the game. Canada plays again on Tuesday against the Swiss team.

Team USA won their opening game of the tournament, 4-1 over team Austria. Four different USA players scored, including Blake Wheeler and Chris Kreider, and goaltender Al Montoya stopped 12 shots in the win.
